I am one of seven children of Wallaca and
MaryAnn
Peterson. My father served on the
USS Conklin during WWII. He shared many
stories pertaining to the typhoon. In fact my fathers
birthday was on June
6. My father was in the number 2 boiler room.
We plan to go to the reunion, and I feel that this is
going to be an awesome experience.
May God Bless!
Sincerely;
RWP

Eileen; Many THX and congratulations for putting this
marvelous site together. Now that I know of its existence I will try to
locate some of
the photos and stories I've seen over the years and forward them to you
for possible inclusion. My Father passed away in 88,' but my Mother
is alive and well and I will encourage her to collect and forward any
memorabilia she may be able to locate. You may wish to send me your
snail-mail address so I'll know where to send materials. THX again and
best of luck in this endeavor.

I have been checking the number of Japanese
submarines sunk in WW2. I have a list of 130. I noticed that the Conklin
was involved in two
of them. The dates were 11/19/44 with the I-177 being
the victim. The other date was 1/22/45 and the I-48 was the victim. I
thought you would
find this of interest. I was on the DE-148 USS Brough.
You have an interesting site. Rod

served won't be forgotten.

involved with these incredible
memories! We too are anxiously awaiting the reunion and the opportunity to
actually board the USS Slater. Thanks Eileen, for your
diligence, and all the enthusiasm you have been inspiring. Jeannie

My father was a asw on the Mcoy Reynolds De440,
sister ship to the Conklin. It was great to read the Conklins
history along with the Reynolds. The Mcoy Reynolds will soon have a web
site to visit. I have seen it and the Conklin is mentioned there
with the Conklin. A very good narritive of the typhoon!!!

Thanks to the

website next time he's over for dinner and I know he'll be excited.
If anyone remembers Curt and would like to pass a
note on to him, please send it to this address and I'll see that he gets

find out The Conklin was a ship, when last night I saw the movie Pearl

This is an outstanding presentation.
I served on the USS DONALDSON (DE-44) and well remember
the typhoon of June 5, 1945 and the rescue of Clifford Farr.
I believe all our crew was proud that our ship was at the right
place and the right crew members prepared to perform the brave rescue.
The Conklin performed mightily to help win WWII, and I'm glad
DE44 operated with her on some task groups in SoPac.

Dear Eileen,
I thought it was noteworthy to inform you that my uncle,
gunner's mate 2nd class, Frederick W. Morris, died
January 17, 2003 at age 82. My uncle was a very quiet,
humble man, so it came as a surprise to me on
reading his obituary to learn of his heroism aboard
the Conklin, DE 439, when on June 5, 1945 a typhoon
caused the ship to roll more than 72 degrees, throwing
my uncle and 3 other shipmates on the flying bridge
overboard. The obituary stated that their heroic story
could be viewed on this website. I read about what
happened that day on the Logs link, but there was no
mention of what happened to the four men on the flying
bridge. Did I miss something? Can their story be found
elsewhere on your website?
After serving his country, Uncle Fred spent the next
39 years of his life as a rigger at Electric Boat
shipyard in Groton, CT, retiring in 1984. He married
Madeline Alger on May 21, 1949. She survives him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 sons,
a daughter, 3 sisters, 7 grandchildren and 4
great-grandchildren. A daughter, 2 brothers and a
sister pre-deceased him.
He is buried in the East Lyme Cemetery, East Lyme, CT 06333.
I, like my cousins (his children) and the rest of his
family, am filled with pride for my uncle and his shipmates.
If you wish to contact his wife or children for
any reason, I can provide addresses.
